SIR Innovation Research Study Update
At last year’s conference, the SIR Research Committee presented results from its inaugural research study on consumer perceptions of innovations within the insurance industry. This year’s study revisited many of the key topics from last year’s study. Our key objective was to again assess consumer sentiment and to understand the movement of perceptions over time. Insight from this presentation will be critical in helping industry practitioners identify the progress made and the opportunity for improvement.

In this session, attendees will learn:
  • Consumer views on the innovativeness of the insurance industry as compared to other financial services industries.
  • The level of success the industry has had in communicating and promoting the innovations currently taking place within the insurance market space.
  • Current usage/adoption of innovations and innovative technologies.
  • The appeal of the various types of insurance innovations, independent of whether the consumer is currently utilizing or aware of the innovations.
  • Prevailing consumer views/concerns regarding inherent risks involved as innovative technologies evolve.
  • Agreeability of consumers to potential behavioral modifications and technology adoption related to insurance innovation.
  • Identification of outcomes (i.e..financial, lifestyle improvement, etc.) that may drive consumer agreeability.
  • Innovation assessments for some top auto and home insurers based on the perception of these carriers’ own customers.
  • Insight on how factors like gender, age, income, etc…impact the views of consumers on the various topics within the study.

Ben Gilad, FGH Academy of Competitive Intelligence - Using CI to Develop/Test Strategy and Influencing Senior Executives Across the Company
Insurers are definitely at the forefront of using data. They’ve been doing it well for decades, way before the Big Data hype. But the weakest point of all data is how to use it to influence top management’s strategic decisions. In that, insurers share a lot in common with other industries like Pharma and financial institutions. In this presentation, Ben will suggest two approaches to increase your effect on strategy in your company. He will also use data to show how data alone isn’t meaningful.

Recent Trends in Mileage: An Insurance Industry Perspective
Over the last several decades, the number of miles people drive on a daily basis has changed dramatically. At the end of the 20th century, more and more people took on long commutes, pushing average mileage up. Factors like the Great Recession of 2007, ridesharing, and a resurgence of the inner cities have had the opposite effect. Because mileage is a direct reflection of exposure to loss, insurers need to understand how vehicles are used in order to properly rate and underwrite them. This session discusses recent trends in mileage and ways insurers can use mileage to better understand the pricing and underwriting exposures they face.

Living in a Data Echo Chamber? Don't Let Limited Data Limit Your Profitability in Today's Challenging Markets
Is your book of business performing to its full profit potential? Where should you focus your expansion efforts? Where should you increase your appetite to optimize profitability?

Since 2009, the insurance industry has tightened underwriting guidelines and improved efficiency, driving many insurers to shift their focus to growth.
Additionally, major insurance events in 2017 are causing significant upward pricing pressure in 2018 as insurers are being forced to raise premiums and becoming less competitive on price.

With so many complex factors impacting both portfolio profitability competitive pricing, driving profitable growth today in your business is a hard challenge across all markets.

This session will review strategies and tools to help you overcome the price/commoditization trap by:
  • Discussing strategies to analyze and help make important decisions about expanding your portfolio profitably.
  • Using data visualization and heat maps to enable you to explore and identify profitable and unprofitable lines and markets on regional, state, and national levels.
  • Identifying territories that have the best combination of volume and profitability by line of business.
  • Ranking markets that present the greatest profit  opportunities and highlighting where your portfolio deviates from other insurers on an aggregate level.
  • Utilizing sophisticated economic forecasting to help identify accounts with premium that will be growing, neutrally impacted, or stressed due to current and future economic trends.

Building the Next Gen Win-Loss Programs: Fostering Collaboration & Accountability
In the “old days”, the single purpose of Win-Loss programs was to increase the rate of winning new business. Often done in silos, with limited action items and accountability, the success rate was nominal. In today’s competitive customer-driven market, newer programs must be broad and align across many functions with clear goals, action items and accountability. Win-Loss programs designed to capture VOC must be a core component to drive innovation, product management, marketing and sales. This session will review an older Win-Loss program with limited results and a newer flexible program with a higher success rate in business transformation.
Goals:
·        Build a modern VOC-driven Win-Loss program with HIGH visibility
·        Foster collaboration & accountability across functions – Innovation, Product Management, Marketing, Sales, Competitive Intelligence & Market Research
·        Connect dots across all pockets of intelligence
·        Develop tangible, executable action items and success metrics

The Cyber Risk Insurance Market Landscape
Attendees will be amazed at what a class of 20 MBA students—wholly unfamiliar with the insurance industry—could achieve in a matter of eight weeks. Pairs of students developed purpose and scope statements for their term research project analyzing the cyber risk insurance marketplace, conducting secondary and primary research, applying different CI analytic techniques (e.g., SERVO, McKinsey7S, Linchpin, Value chain), and profiling cyber risk insurers (including business model). Students compiled a great set of resources, commenting on the tools that were most helpful in completing their assignments. Keiser will present the results of student discoveries about this industry segment and the allied cybersecurity industry firms often partnering with insurance companies to provide risk assessments, innovations in detection, remediation, and corporate response.

Agile Reinvention: Staying Current with Professional & Personal Skills Required to be an Insights Ninja
Have you ever been the victim of a ‘reduction in force’ (RIF), or reorganization, where you absolutely loved your role and the organization you worked for, and there wasn’t anything you could do to change your unfortunate circumstance? Have you ever wondered, what more could I have done to either enhance my skills closer to the point of indispensability, or attach myself to such a critical outcome in the organization that would make you immune to this all-too-often outcome in “Corporate America”?

If you’ve ever struggled with any of these questions, or many others that might be related to it, join two industry professionals – Karen Kaluzsa of Cigna and Derek Johnson of Aurora WDC – for this session at SIR that will have something for everyone, regardless of the style of insurance products (health, life, commercial, etc.) you may support. In this session, learn about how Karen’s journey – as a classically-trained librarian for a top management consulting agency, with a background in law, and knowing very little about the actual industry of Health Insurance – required an agile reinvention of her core industry skillset to make a hard pivot to an industry she has come to love. Moderated by Derek, who also reinvented himself over 15 years ago from a promising career in the Investment Management arena to an industry he really knew nothing about, this duo will light-heartedly confront a wide variety of skills (professional and personal) that are part and parcel to becoming an Insights Ninja.

Advancing Competitive Intelligence
In the independent agency channel, private passenger auto and home comparative raters provide agents with an easy way to obtain rates from multiple carriers. Carriers can use this information both from a public policy perspective and to understand their competitive position in the marketplace. This session will discuss both uses of this data featuring case studies and examples from multiple comparative raters, with hints on how to handle different data structures.

Designing Magical Moments
The most memorable moments in life are the best, the worst, and last moments of an experience. Most of the in-between gets forgotten. In most businesses, especially service-based ones, magical moments happen. Someone goes the extra mile to make a person feel extra special on the other end. But, why wait for chance to make these experiences happen…plan for them.

Magical moments are genuine interactions with customers that bring unexpected value in a moment and draw them emotionally closer to your company. Through the use of a variety of research methods, including journey mapping, empathy mapping, ethnography, qualitative sessions, and design thinking, customer experience plans are designed to inspire and enable employees to create magical moments for customers. When systems or processes are difficult to fix and cause pain points, consider magical moments.  When tough and exceptionally great conversations are happening with customers, consider magical moments. Using research to anticipate and guide purposeful plans requires a little science, a little creativity, and a lot of heart.
